Unfortunately, it’s shown consumers that convenience comes at a cost: increased security issues and privacy concerns due to how the technology works.

How RFID Technology Works

1. Radio frequency identification technology requires a device (called a "reader") to recognize the location and identification of an object.
2. It does this by sending out unique radio frequencies to transmit a signal that activates the electronic tag on the object.
3. Once activated, the chip uses energy generated by the electromagnetic waves to transmit information back to the reader's antenna.
4. Then, the transmission is electronically translated into data.

This exchange occurs within a matter of seconds, and it does not require the RFID chip to be within the reader‘s direct line of sight. According to SageData, most devices have a reading range of about three feet, but some can reliably scan RFID tags as far as 16 feet away. These devices can be portable, battery-operated, and worse yet, purchased by anyone for cheap.

Therefore, any hacker with a card reader could potentially steal your ID or card details without you even knowing — a crime known as RFID skimming or electronic pickpocketing.

RFID and Credit Cards

Security experts have long warned about the potential risks associated with RFID technology — especially in regards to credit card theft. For example, a report from February 2012 showed statistics provided by the United States Department of Justice indicating a ~30% increase in credit and debit card theft that correlates with the introduction of RFID cards and contactless payments in the early 2000s.

Fast forward about a decade to the end of 2021, in the wake of the coronavirus, when 101.2 million Americans were projected to use contactless payments. Prior to Covid-19, only a small portion of American adults was using contactless payments, but the pandemic has created a “contactless economy“ in which 87% of all new debit cards and nearly all new credit cards issued by major banks are expected to be RFID-enabled.

This technology allows you to simply tap your payment card or mobile wallet onto the POS (point of sale) terminal rather than inserting an EMV chip or swiping a magstripe. Then, Visa warns, ”Unfortunately... it is entirely possible that a contactless reader may be used for surreptitious interrogation (e.g., data skimming) of the contactless portable electronic devices. In addition, it is conceivable that a contactless reader may be developed or modified to generate a much greater RF signal strength and sensitivity and thereby increase the standard range. Such an enhanced reader may allow surreptitious interrogation of the contactless portable electronic devices from a greater range.”

Is a Carbon Fiber wallet good?

Carbon fiber wallets are an excellent choice for those who want to protect their cards. The Ridge carbon fiber wallets are strong, scratch-resistant, and offer RFID protection against signals that hackers use to steal your debit and credit card details.

What makes carbon fiber so strong?

The material is made of densely packed thin strands of carbon. These fibers have exceptionally high tensile strength. In fact, a version of carbon fiber, named the carbon nanotube, is considered by many to be the strongest material available in the world.

Simply put, an RFID-blocking carbon fiber wallet provides rugged protection to go along with its minimalist wallet design.

Is Titanium stronger than Carbon Fiber?

This is a difficult question to answer as there are varying grades of titanium, each with its own density and tensile strength.

For example, Grade 9 titanium has a similar tensile strength to carbon fiber, though carbon fiber is almost three times less dense. When you match Grade 9 titanium with carbon fiber of a similar density, carbon fiber ends up being almost three times as strong as Grade 9 titanium.

However, these strengths change if you use Grade 5 titanium. This type of titanium has a tensile strength of 925 Megapascals (MPa) compared to carbon fiber’s 600MPa. But again, density plays a role, with carbon fiber also being three times less dense than Grade 5 titanium. Is Titanium more expensive than Carbon Fiber?

You probably have between 5-10 plastic cards that you keep in your wallet at all times, whether those are credit cards, debit cards, your blood donor card, your driver’s license, or what have you. When it comes to placing them in your Ridge, you obviously want to put them all together—but you also want the ease of access, since these are the cards you’ll be taking out the most.

The best trick for doing this is to hold the Ridge up, with the backside of it (the cash side) facing you, while the front faces the person standing across from you. Pulling the Ridge open at the top, place the cards you use the closest to you—I.E., closest to the back of the wallet. That’s because when you open it up, the cards in the back will be the handiest, while the ones at the front might take a little longer. Sort the cards by what you use the most.

Some people prefer the reverse method, wherein they keep their most-used cards at the front, instead of the back. Try both of these methods, and see what works for you!

What About My Punch Cards, Loyalty Cards, Et Cetera?

You probably have at least a few of these in your wallet, and you might have a lot. Either way, they have to go somewhere. But you want to be able to find them easily when you want them, and not have to sort through them constantly when you don’t. So, the first thing you should do is separate these cards from your important credit, debit, ID cards, and so on. 

If you previously placed all of your credit cards at the back of the wallet, then go ahead and place your punch cards/loyalty cards at the back, but facing the same direction. Meanwhile, if you put your credit cards at the front, place your loyalty cards at the back. Because you only use these cards when you’re at a specific store or restaurant, it’s less important to be able to get them quickly. Naturally, you can organize them face-first according to which ones you use the most.

When you're buying your first Ridge, you may not expect it to be so… intricate.

There's just so much that goes into the decision: aluminum, or carbon fiber? Rose gold, or blue? Then, you come across the most difficult one of all: do you get the cash strap or the money clip?

We're in the business of making your life easier, whether that's simplifying your wallet or protecting your cards from RFID scanning—so we're not going to leave you hanging on these questions. We break down the pros and cons of each option below:

Perks Of The Cash Strap

You obviously already see the importance of keeping a slim profile when it comes to your wallet—we've talked enough about bulky wallets and crooked spines by now. Well, a cash strap reinforces that philosophy. It adds hardly any measurable thickness to the Ridge but can handle pretty much any kind of thick cash wad you slide into it. 

We don't recommend slipping in a couple bands into the cash strap, though. That would pretty much defeat the purpose. 

There's also the aesthetic to consider. Make sure you check our gallery page to review the different looks of that black band running across the Ridge. There's definitely something to be said about the level of parallels it adds. 

Also, if you manage to get it cut, or stretch it out too far, it's simple to replace with a new band. 

Benefits Of The Money Clip

Now, the cash strap is no slouch in terms of durability. However, it isn't a metal, held-by-screws, money clip. When you choose the money clip, be aware that you're sacrificing a bit of space… but, when we say bit, we mean a very tiny bit - A Ridge Wallet with a money clip is still a Ridge Wallet. We keep it slim. 

The durability is a huge plus that you've got to consider. Unlike elastic, you'll barely scratch it if a blade somehow runs across your cash spot.

There are a few things to consider from an aesthetic perspective here as well. If you're opting for the titanium wallet, it doesn't get much cooler than bolting on the money clip. 

In the end, it comes down to your personal taste. Hopefully, we've helped a little, though. And, don't worry—if you buy a cash strap and decide later down the road that you want a money clip, just order one. You can install it all yourself!
